School Uniform

At St Mary's, we want our school uniform to be smart, practical, comfortable and active. Our Active Uniform helps children feel part of the St Mary's community while allowing them to take part fully in learning, play and physical activity. Following our school uniform trial, we consulted children and parents about the proposed changes. Their feedback helped shape our final 2026 policy and confirmed the importance of comfort, practicality, affordability and inclusion, while maintaining a smart and consistent school identity. Over the course of 2026-2027 the previous summer dress (striped) can still be worn. Children coming into Y1 from reception can wear their EYFS uniform until we switch to winter uniform after the October half term. |
We are committed to keeping our uniform affordable and accessible. Most items can be bought from supermarkets and other usual retailers, and the school logo is optional on items where a logoed version is available. If you need help with uniform costs, please contact the school office. We hold a good stock of pre-loved uniform and also run pre-loved uniform events.
Please make sure that all uniform is clearly marked with your child's name.

Years 1-6: summer and winter uniform
The school has two uniform periods. Some items are worn throughout the year, while others are specific to summer or winter.
Summer uniform is worn from the beginning of the Summer Term until the Autumn half-term. Children therefore return to school in September wearing summer uniform.
Winter uniform is worn from the first day after the Autumn half-term until the beginning of the Summer Term.
Years 1-6 uniform
The following items form our main school uniform:
White polo shirt - with or without the school logo
Green school jumper or cardigan - with or without the school logo
Green sweatshirt - with or without the school logo
Green school fleece - with or without the school logo
School-type grey trousers, shorts or skort
Black trainers - no branded logos
Black or dark grey socks
Optional items
Green waterproof reversible school coat - all year
Green and white checked summer dress - summer uniform
Green or grey pinafore dress or skirt - winter uniform
White school shirt and tie - winter uniform
School caps and hats - all year
PE kit
On PE days, children wear their PE kit into school.
White T-shirt - with or without the school logo
Black shorts, tracksuit bottoms or leggings
Black trainers
Nursery and Reception
Children in Nursery and Reception wear a different uniform from children in Years 1-6. Their uniform is the same throughout the year.
Green polo shirt - school logo optional
Black shorts, leggings or tracksuit bottoms
Green sweatshirt - with or without the school logo

Black trainers - no laces please

Hair and headwear
Children's hair should be neat and presentable. Extreme hairstyles and oversized accessories are not appropriate for school. Children with long hair should tie it back for safety reasons.
Only small items of headwear in school colours should be worn. Where a child has particular religious, cultural, SEND or sensory requirements, please speak to the school so that an appropriate arrangement can be agreed.
Jewellery, make-up and nail varnish
Children may not wear jewellery to school except for watches and invisible small stud earrings. Make-up and nail varnish are not permitted in school.
Individual needs and adjustments
We want every child to be able to wear a uniform that is comfortable, suitable for their needs and inclusive. If your child has SEND or sensory needs, or religious or cultural dress requirements, please contact the school. Individual adaptations to the standard uniform will be considered and permitted wherever possible, while taking account of health and safety.
Buying school uniform
You do not have to buy branded uniform. Uniform that meets the requirements above can be bought from supermarkets or any other suitable retailer. Where an item is available with the St Mary's logo, the logo is optional.
