‘It is appropriate to speak of religious education as "the core of the core curriculum". Religious education in Catholic schools refers to the integral education of the pupils, both through the religious dimension of the school as a whole and through the specific programme of religious studies which it provides. This religious education is broader than catechesis, but it must also include catechesis, since a principal goal of the Catholic school must be to hand on the faith.’
Pope John Paul II 1992
Our Religious Curriculum is at the heart of St Mary’s.
We use Dr. Margaret Carswell’s Framework Model. Each unit draws on foundational documents of the Church, universal and local, and well researched best practice in Religious Education as an academic discipline. Written by one of the consultants for the Religious Education Directory, To Love you More Dearly, each unit brings both the vision and the mandated requirements of the RED to classroom practice. It presents a Catholic world view, expressed at Vatican II, through learning about the Traditions of the Church, Human Experience, Creation and Scripture, named as the sources of revelation in Dei Verbum. In addition to exploring the life and teachings of Jesus, children study a range of World faiths. This is to allow our children to understand their community better and prepare them for living life in a modern Britain.
We also use the Rooted in Love resources from Caritas to develop children’s understanding of Catholic Social Teaching and its role in today’s society. Each half term focuses on one principle to allow pupils to fully explore the significance of that principle and how to put it into practice.
