Our Liturgical Year
“Like a great waterwheel, the liturgical year goes on relentlessly irrigating our souls, softening the ground of our hearts, nourishing the soil of our lives until the seed of the Word of God itself begins to grow in us, comes to fruit in us, ripens in us the spiritual journey of a lifetime. So goes the liturgical year through all the days of our lives. /it concentrates us on the two great poles of the faith - the birth and death of Jesus of Nazareth.”
Joan D. Chittister
Just as the earth revolves around the sun, which we call an orbit, so too does the Church revolve around the Son of God, Jesus Christ. The Liturgical calendar puts the universal Church, which is established all over the world, on the same page so that we can celebrate and worship God together as the one Body of Christ.
The Liturgical year is made up of 6 seasons to allow us to prepare, celebrate and reflect on the life of Christ:
- Advent (purple) – A time of preparation before the birth of Jesus
- Christmas (white/gold) – A time to celebrate the birth of Jesus and his revealing to the peoples of the world
- Lent (purple) – A time of preparation before the death of Jesus
- Triduum (red/black) – The holiest “three days” in the Church’s year, where we recall the suffering, death and resurrection
- Easter (white / gold) – A time of joyful celebration in the Lord’s resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit
- Ordinary time (green) – A time to consider and reflect of the teachings and works of Jesus
Throughout the year, children at St Mary’s participate in liturgical celebrations and understand the significance of each season. Our child-led worships and whole school worships reflect on each liturgical season and the theme it represents.

Autumn Term
Nativity of Mary - We are named after St Mary, the Mother of Christ. To begin the academic year we celebrated her feast day.
Care of Creation Assembly - We listened about how it is important to look after God's world and everything in it. According to Genesis 1, God put us in charge of his creation, however we are not looking after it. We listened to messages in Pope Francis's 'Laudato Si' and made a pledge to care for creation.
Mini Vinnies Assembly - We invited the SVP to join us in commissioning our new Mini Vinnies for the academic year.
Harvest Festival - We had a member from the Upper Room visit us to talk about the important work they do for the homeless and most vulnerable in London and they described what we could do to help.
