Walk to School Week 2026

This year, St Mary’s will be taking part in Walk to School Week from the 18th – 22nd May.

Our school will be joining hundreds of others from across the UK in a fun and engaging week-long activity, designed to make pupils experience first-hand the importance of walking to school.  The challenge encourages children to travel actively to school every day of the week. Pupils will be encouraged to walk, wheel, cycle and scoot to school every day of the week, earning stickers as they go along.  Through this challenge, children will be well on their way to reaching their recommended 60 minutes minimum of physical activity per day before, even reaching the school gates!

Congratulations to Year 5 Częstochowa, who are the Walk to School winners for March and April!  They will be rewarded with a Mufti Day on Monday 18th May.

Year 3 Ancient Greek Day

As part of Ancient Greek topic, Year Three spent the day living as ancient Greeks. Firstly, we made identity cards to show we were citizens of either Athens or Sparta, these included our Greek names and city state logo. Next, we made laurel wreaths from craft materials. In Ancient Greece, they were made of branches and leaves of the laurel, a type of evergreen shrub or small tree. It was worn on the head as a symbol of triumph.

We also took the time to study the designs of different Olympic medals. This helped us to make our own medals, with a unique design, from clay. In the afternoon, the classes sampled a variety of Greek foods. These included: pitta bread, olives, hummus and feta cheese. The cheese in particular, was very popular! To finish off the day, we completed labyrinth puzzles and used the experience to create our own challenges.

SMI Celebration of Diversity week

Parent-led workshops
The week of the 1st June 2026 will be St. Mary’s Celebration of Diversity week. We want to invite you into the school! If you or a family member would like to come in and talk to the children about your culture or heritage, read a traditional story or do a ‘show and tell’ with the children (other ideas are all welcome!), please email us at reply@smi.hounslow.sch.uk and include ‘SMI Celebration of Diversity Week’ in the subject line.

The Cultural food event is back!
We are delighted to announce that our annual Cultural Food Event is back and will take place on Thursday 4th June at 3.15pm in the school playground. After the success of last year’s event, we are excited to once again celebrate the wonderful diversity of our school community. We invite all families to join us by bringing a dish that represents their culture or heritage. This is a fantastic opportunity to share food, stories, and traditions with one another as we come together to celebrate and appreciate the richness of our different backgrounds. Everyone is welcome – we look forward to seeing you there!

Cultural clothes day
In addition to the food event, Thursday 4th June is also a day that children can come into school wearing traditional clothing from their culture, the colours of a flag or clothing that represents their culture.
