Weekly Update for 7th March 2025 - International Women's Day

International Women's Day

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my saviour.
For he has looked with favour on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
In every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
He has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant, Israel,
for he has remembered his promise of mercy
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children forever.

Pope Francis continues to be treated in hospital in Rome.  He continues to ask for our prayers and this week entrusted himself and us to the intercessions of Mary, the original international woman.  We ask for her prayers today: Hail Mary..

Lent

We are now in the season of Lent as we prepare for Easter.  On Ash Wednesday most of us attended a special Mass in Church with ashing.  It was a lovely celebration during which we all thought about what we were going to give up (or do extra), what extra payers we were going to say and who would be helping.  There are several additional activities taking place during Lent. You can see those in the school calendar https://www.smi.hounslow.sch.uk/Calendar/ with more information to follow.

Anti-Racism parent survey – Spring 2025

You have until the end of today to give us your views on Anti-Racism in the school. Thank you to the 37 people who have already taken part.  The survey should not take more than just a few minutes. You can access the survey here: https://forms.gle/HYRhczQmVdCVnad48

World Book Day 2025

We all had a great day for this year's World Book Day on Thursday.  Well done everyone!

School Council news

This week the school councillors have been busy completing questionnaires with their classes to gather feedback on their peers’ most popular and unpopular food dishes. On Tuesday, the children had the opportunity to taste a wide range of new dishes for our new menu for after Easter. They are looking forward to sharing the new menu with their peers. Thank you and well-done councillors!

TfL Travel Ambassadors

On Wednesday, our team of TfL Travel Ambassadors visited the TfL office in Stratford. Here we discussed and brainstormed how we could encourage families from our school, to travel actively more.

After this, our team devised a step-by-step plan to implement our idea and then devised a pitch. We were very lucky to be one of two schools (out of 20) that were picked to deliver our pitch. Our persuasive language and enthusiasm earnt us a well-deserved round of applause and lots of praise from the TfL staff!

Watch out for our ‘St Mary’s Space Stride’ initiative, which we hope to pitch to the school, after the Easter holidays before we implement it!

Congratulations to Year 3 Doncaster and Ipswich, who were WOW Walk to School winners for February!

Year 6 Be Bright, Travel Right

As part of their secondary transition work, this week, Year 6 were visited by Performance in Education, who delivered an interactive theatre workshop called ‘Be Bright Travel Right’.

In the production, we met different characters that were looking ahead to secondary school and how to plan their travel. The show explored different ways of travelling to school safely and the importance of planning your route. This included revising the M rule for checking your bike before taking it out, behaving respectfully on transport and not using distracting devices when moving near roads. The workshop also discussed peer pressure (feeling pressured by peers) and explored self-esteem. The Year 6 children were amazing at practising how to verbally build each other up.

We hope that the children use their learning to begin to plan their journeys to and from secondary school and enjoy further transition activities on our lead up to their move onto secondary education.

Year 4 Science electricity workshop and Orchestra unwrapped

Over the past two weeks, year 4 have enjoyed both an exciting science ‘electricity’ day and a trip to the Southbank centre, to see ‘orchestra unwrapped’; a professional live orchestra. The children really enjoyed both days.

The science day gave pupils the opportunity to create various types of workable circuits and even attempt to create a car using a circuit. Conversely, Orchestra unwrapped provided pupils with the chance to see their first ever live orchestra in action. The theme was ‘Nordic sounds and the children thoroughly enjoyed the occasion.

Attendance and Lateness - week beginning 28th Feb

Well done to those classes with over 97% attendance! Ipswich, Willesden, Fátima, Doncaster, Knock, Lourdes and Westminster - great job!  The longer days and warmer weather are making walking, scooting and cycling all the more appealing.  Give it a go!
